Starfinder is a sci-fi fantasy roleplaying game created by Paizo. Despite only ever experiencing one brief campaign, I quickly grew to really appreciate the game and its mechanics. Understanding how to play tabletop RPGs has been a bit of a learning curve for me, over the past few years. During sessions, I sometimes get lost when having to balance studying a character sheet while making critical decisions on the spot. For this project, my wish is to make character sheets more intuitive for beginners. I’ve been exploring a character sheet layout and widget design for a Starfinder-themed Roll20 virtual tabletop. As I work through iterations, I am working on receiving feedback from more avid tabletop gamers.
Take a look at my first wireframe sketches and prototype in Adobe XD. In the following sketches, I considered the distribution of information based on immediate needs of a player. I also brainstormed how the use of icons and color coding could help relay the hierarchy of different subsets of information such as weapon and item types/general specs.
My next steps will involve a deeper dive into studying more of Starfinder community needs and wishes expressed across forums and custom character sheet sets. More information needs to be filled in so that I can better understand what's missing or extraneous. I also plan to more thoroughly outline the ideal behaviors of the different features within each screen. At some point I'll then work on refining the alignment of my wireframe screen elements along grids.
